Famous World Seed Store located on Norwegian polar archipelago Svalbard, decided to open its stocks after the Syrian civil war was planting material bank in Aleppo destroyed.
Representatives of the International Center asked for help from Norwegians agricultural research of arid regions. During recent military conflicts in the largest Syrian the city, the building of the local seed store was destroyed. Remaining the material was decided to be transported to the Lebanese capital Beirut.

Center staff asked representatives of the World seed storage samples of planting material capable of bear fruit in the arid conditions of the Middle East. Supposed that all Arabs will need about a hundred and sixteen thousand varieties of seeds. Norwegians said they would be happy to share stocks, especially given that many of these seeds were sent to the Scandinavian state from Syria to her better times.

Svalbard World Seed Represents a huge underground bunker that can withstand a powerful nuclear explosion. Here, in permafrost conditions, order is kept nine hundred thousand seeds of cereal, fruitful and edible plants with all over the world. It is assumed that if a disaster happens planetary scale, the surviving remnants of humanity will be able again sow the Earth with these seeds, saving important plants from extinction.
The Norwegian seed store was opened in 2006. To reduce possible risks, every few decades it is planned update planting material, however, note that each seed can be stored on average up to two centuries.
