Thoughtless photo retouching yesterday and Today

As soon as the photo appeared, the desire was born right there make the images more original, for example, in the 19th century for some time even the fashion of making headless existed portraits.

From the point of view of today’s photo retouching, for example, with using Adobe Photoshop, it’s the piquancy of photographers the century before last looks a bit wild, but you have to consider that technically, that operation was much easier to do than something else, for example, to rejuvenate or embellish a person on photo how it is practiced nowadays using the same Photoshop.

But, despite the huge progress in processing photos, two things remained unchanged: on the one hand, high professionalism, bordering on art, and on the other – thoughtless retouching pictures from home-grown “specialists”. I will give two examples concerning just curious cases of reason for unreasonable retouching.

Mindless retouching photos of the last century

Even when the Soviet Union was in any newspaper and magazine widely retouching of pictures was used, due to which there was something superfluous (one or another defect) was removed, something needed (say, a book in in the hands of a prominent politician) “finished.” I remember one interesting case that occurred in the regional newspaper “Call” Vladimirskaya area. Public correspondent photojournalist (of those who were not editorial staff, but collaborated with her, performed her tasks) brought somehow from a collective farm pictures of advanced agricultural workers. And among them was a photo of an advanced machine operator, about achievements which was just preparing a note on the front page of the newspaper. Like everything would turn out well, but here’s the bad luck: the machine operator was photographed in a quilted jacket, with a wide open, and under it – not shirts, nothing. Without thinking twice, the editor’s photo artist painted on this very shirt with a tie – it just turned out class. So the picture came out in the “Call”.

… A few days later this very same editorial staff arrives machine operator. No, do not be indignant, but just find out where it managed to take off a tie that he had never worn in his life? Of course, they did not begin to explain the “kitchen” of the retouching to him, but advised to be more discreet when removed photo correspondents: they say they’re not capable of such miracles …

Thoughtless photo retouching today

And now, no less striking example from today. Not so long ago on the official website of the Prime Minister of Australia Scott John Morrison appeared his family photo, in which a prominent politician suddenly appeared … with two left legs. As suggested Internet users, site designers, apparently confused the old premiere sneakers and they replaced them with new ones, and since long did not want to mess with the picture, then we used one sneaker for both legs – it turned out again just a class!

That’s just on social networks, like Twitter, right away there were several memes on this occasion, why the secretary Morrison even had to explain that the minister did not give any directions for editing his photo. Moreover, soon and Scott Morrison himself appeared on the social network, saying in a tweet that he personally he didn’t ask the department’s employees to “clean his shoes” – that’s all on their conscience and professionalism …
