Scientists from the People’s Republic of China, it seems to them, discovered a huge pond hidden under the desert in Xinjiang.
According to experts, the water content in the underground ocean may exceed the volume of the Great Lakes located in the United States and Canada, that is almost two million cubic kilometers.
Chinese experts made this discovery in Tarim the basin, which is the largest basin landscape Central Asia. Scientists claim that snowmelt has led to increase in the underground ocean water level, which allowed scientists detect a hidden pond. Professor Li Yan, who is one of authors of the find, told reporters: “So much water, hidden water by the earth, it is simply amazing. We’ve never before suspected that something like this exists underground in this arid region. We may all have to change our view of the deserts. ”
Like many other scientific discoveries, this was done by chance. The Chinese tried to find in the land not water, but carbon. The aim of the project was to analyze climate changes. Experts have explored regions where carbon dioxide absorbed in large quantities. These zones are called “carbon sinks” – these include, for example, oceans and the woods. A decade ago, experts noticed that in Tarim large volumes of carbon dioxide disappear without a trace, and decided find out the cause of this phenomenon. As you can see, they succeeded.
Currently, Li Yan and his team plan to establish collaboration with colleagues from other countries to find out do underground oceans exist beneath our other deserts the planet.
