For decades, society has maintained a stereotype, according to which men have much more sexual partners, than women. However, in 2003. in one of the scientific journals article that described an interesting experiment: participants research, being tested on a lie detector, talked about the number of intimate partners, and for both sexes the numbers were in average equal.
At the same time, women lied when they thought they could hide it, because they were afraid of conviction in promiscuous sex life. Despite the fact that in modern society many stereotypes fade away, in recently, studies increasingly confirm that men and women still feel pressure on gender issues when it’s about sex. About 300 college students attended a questionnaire survey that included questions regarding 124 different behaviors. Thus were the most characteristic behaviors for men and for women: men, for example, more than women tend to wear stale clothes and letting go of dirty jokes, etc. After questionnaires, some students were connected to a polygraph, however, they were not informed that it was disabled. Regarding questions, not talking about sex, students did not feel any pressure, and boldly answered questions related to gender roles. For instance, many girls admitted that they are engaged in power exercises with dumbbells. But in matters of sex, their behavior changed. “There is something unique about sexuality that makes people care more about stereotypes about them gender, “says study author Terry Fisher, professor Psychology, Ohio. The number of sexual partners in men decreased during a polygraph test, and for women, on the contrary increased. Most experiment participants had different answers to questions depending on whether they should speak the truth. It turned out that sexuality is the only area where men and women were worried that they could not match average representatives of their gender. Historically fixed behaviors idealize the image of a man who has many partners, which confirms his strength and health, and a woman, in turn, should, on the contrary, have few partners, which talks about her modesty and honesty.
