Scientists have found that squirrels learn about the proximity or absence of nearby predators.
Watching Carolina Squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), American scientists have found that they listen to the twitter of birds to determine a safe zone from predators.
These sounds calm the protein, and when they stop, then perceive it as a threat – the predator is somewhere nearby. American scientists conducted research on Carolina proteins in parks and other areas of the city of Oberlin.
To begin with, 54 squirrels were given the opportunity to listen to the recording of predatory sounds. red-tailed buzzard (Buteo jamaicensis – hawk family). Then half of the animals were given to listen to a simple bird’s twitter, and the second half record the noise of the city. It turned out that the proteins of both groups sometimes experienced a sense of anxiety, freezing and listening to waiting for a bird of prey. The squirrels that were allowed to listen to birdsong expressed their concern less often.
Scientists are sure that this behavior in Caroline squirrels developed during evolution.
Earlier ESOREITER talked about how a squirrel grabbed action camera, recorded her movements on it.
