Wise guys see a fly, but miss an elephant

Our vision of the world depends on the level of intelligence. TO This conclusion was made by psychologists from the University of Rochester (USA). They are found that people with high IQ tend to pay attention to little things, but ignore larger objects. And, on the contrary, than lower intelligence coefficient, the brain is more inclined to fix “elephants” and not notice “flies.” Study 65 volunteers whose IQ ranged from 80 to 140 were asked to watch a video in which moving screens appeared and disappeared black and white figures. In this case, the participants in the experiment should quickly determine which way an object is moving – left to right or right to left. The figures were presented in three sizes. The smallest objects grouped in the center of the field view where to detect the movement is easiest. As they appeared in randomly, subjects could not prepare in advance for assignment and consciously monitor the movements of a particular figure. According to Professor Duy Tadin, who leads the study, participants had to evaluate movement on the unconscious level. It turned out that the higher the IQ of the subject, the better managed to track small objects in the foreground and worse – large objects in the background. As it decreases intellectual coefficient observed the opposite picture. According to researchers, high IQ helps the brain better filter information, so intellectuals are more attentive to the little things. In certain situations, this feature worldview brings practical benefits – say, if you need to focus on working at a computer while in crowded place (for example, at the office or at the airport), or lead car on a busy street. This allows you to keep track of what before your eyes, and concentrate on the current task, not distracted by other people or flickering past homes and advertising signs … At the same time, the habit of not noticing “elephants” is far from always positively affects our lives. Recall that many professors and academicians completely unsuitable for practical life people. They can admire the flower in the pot, admire the beauty of the landscape on the wall or some figurine, but not pay attention to the leaked ceiling, the broken cabinet door, dirt in the apartment (although a single spot on the clean surfaces can literally piss them off) or lack food in the refrigerator. But “non-intellectual” all this for sure catches your eye. The saddest thing is that soaring in the intellectual “wilds” often do not notice the emotional state of others people, and this can cause resentment, problems and conflicts. Intellectual men may not respond to changes in appearance their partners, if it’s not about some small details, conspicuous – they would rather notice an intricate pendant than new dress … Take a joke about a wife who is unsuccessful attempts to attract, finally, the attention of the spouse, put on his head gas mask, and he asked: “Have you done a new hairstyle?” Typical “genius” behavior … However, this is usually attributed absent-mindedness and easily reconcile with such “eccentricities” … From store intellectual can return with a bag of dubious things needs such as processed cheeses, toothpicks or disposable sets dishes (and all this, as a rule, is purchased by him in astronomical quantities), but he would never guess to buy meat, fish, sausage, cheese or toilet paper. Purchases are made by a kind of logic that he understands … As for cooking, then our “genius” can know how to make coffee or tea by twenty in different ways, but at the same time have no idea how to cook porridge or elemental soup. So very often, “geniuses” can not do without personal assistant, which usually becomes a wife, a housekeeper, secretary or someone from the household. This man walks for purchases, cleans the apartment, prepares and solves all problems practical in nature. A medium of high intelligence, meanwhile quite effectively working herself on the discoveries of the century … Irina Shlion
