This was in the sixties and seventies of the last century. At one Yakut family living in the village did not breed cattle: either the cows remained summer (the Yakuts call this misfortune the word “kulunnaabyt”), or calves were born dead (respectively “torbostobut”). But even if the calf was born alive, then turned out to be very weak and died for a week.
According to local beliefs, the reasons for such an unhappiness could be two: or cattle spirits ceased to patronize the owners in punishment for any wrongdoing, or got into a stable like this called calf eater – torbuyah abasyt. It’s petty evil a spirit that is not able to harm a person directly, but harms au pair, feeding on the spirits of calves.
As we have already said, events took place in Soviet times with his materialistic ideology. Therefore, the couple decided that there’s a rational explanation for everything and we need to somehow treat the cattle. Already gathered to send for a veterinarian, but once the mistress, Having returned home, I found a five-year-old son in a stable. Not yet entering there, the woman distinctly heard two voices from within: her sons and some other child. When she went into the stable, her the baby played quietly, sitting on the ground, no strangers was not near.
Mother arranged an interrogation for her son, and he admitted that he had for some time a friend appeared – a shaggy dirty guy dressed in animal skins. He emerged from the dark corner of the barn and never left the room, so the children only played inside the crib. Kid at the same time constantly asked the master’s son to bring him scraps with table and do not say anything to parents, otherwise their communication will come end.
Hearing this, the woman got scared and told everything to her husband, and he went straight to the village shaman, of whom there were in Yakutia a lot at all times. The sorcerer confirmed that he lives in a barn calf eater, and gave advice on how to get rid of the evil spirit. One morning, the father handed his son a razor-sharp steel knife.
– Hide it under trousers and pretend that you want to play with my friend. And when he gets close to you, hit him with all forces with a blade in the stomach, – the man severely punished.

A boy raised in obedience to parents, without any hesitation he submitted to his father’s will. He was given a whole plate of delicious food and sent to the barn. Putting your offering in the middle of the crib the child sat nearby and began to play with toys. This time his a shaggy friend did not dare to appear for a long time, but then he nevertheless looked out from his corner and incredulously glanced at the treat.
“How did your parents let you take all this?” – doubtfully he asked.
– They don’t know, don’t worry. Go eat, then we’ll play, – as if nothing had happened the master’s son answered and beckoned his friend by hand.
The calf eater warily approached the plate and took from there a cake. Seizing the moment, the boy pulled a knife from under his trouser leg and at the very hilt stuck it in the stomach of the spirit. The shed filled a deafening screech and the child passed out. After some his father brought him to his senses. The boy saw that he was lying on the ground, and the knife in his hand is stained with thick black blood. Beside half-eaten flat cake was lying.
No more angry devourer appeared in the stable, and the owner’s cows since then began to calve normally.
