The story of how a gopher helped archaeologists find in Astrakhan treasure area, similar to a bike. However, it was this animal that turned out to be the hero of the excavations conducted by Mari specialists State University in Selitrenny fortifications.
In this place, in the XII-XV centuries, the capital was presumably Golden Horde – the city of Sarai, which is of interest to scientists in many reasons:
- firstly, we are talking about the history of Russia, which thanks archaeologists are becoming more understandable and real for us;
- secondly, information about the Tatar-Mongol invasion of Russia are increasingly questioned by progressive scholars, and confirm or refute various “fresh” theories may today only archaeological discoveries (as written sources, independent researchers claim, were destroyed or rewritten to please the Western elite).

As for the gopher, he was hardly set so high purpose, as the restoration of historical justice, but simply snout another mink for housing and, having stumbled upon a treasure, began to throw coins that interfered with him. So it helped archaeologists discover unique artifacts.
In total, experts gathered at this place more one and a half hundred coins, each of which represents a huge value. How much this finding will help scientists in revealing secrets of the past, it’s too early to speak, but in itself it is great luck archaeologists.
Unfortunately, the researchers prevented the gopher from building it, but they were very grateful to the little digger and even tried feed him. However, the free rodent did not want to become tame and more become a permanent assistant to archaeologists: stood before him a completely different task – procreation, in comparison with which any “priceless treasure” is a meaningless trifle.
