Even the astounding cave temples of Ellora do not go either what comparison with the central religious building of the valley – Kailasanath Temple (or, in other words, Kailash), carved into monolithic, lonely standing rock.
Unusual the very idea of such a fabulous building, towering among the cave temples surrounding it. In its power and size the temple completely unique and far superior and egyptian Abu Simbel and Jordanian Petra. This unique rock temple is not built and carved like a sculpture.

1. The rock mass was trimmed, starting from the top to the very bottom, without the use of scaffolding for 100 years by 10 thousand builders armed only with a Kyle, a chisel and a hammer.

2. Moreover, the rock from which the temple is carved does not consist of loose sandstone, limestone or tuff, like almost all others like constructions, but from the very stone that is hard on the Earth – basalt.

3. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine how it was built – first the men came to the top of a favorite rock, on stones and potholes somehow outlined a plan for a future grand building, then the workers came and began to peck this rock that there is urine.

4. First hollowed out the temple head, then the upper tower – the main one and even smaller nearby, then the roof was pushed out (immediately with all sculptures and decorations decorating it), then – the walls, then – steps and finally – the area around the temple with its sculptures and columns.

5. The result was an initial rough outer box made of stone. Then it began to punch through doors, windows, gnaw inside the part in which the halls, walls, partitions were made and again many sculptures and bas-reliefs. Moreover, it was impossible at any stage make mistakes – it would be practically impossible to fix them !! I I remember in the army I was trying to somehow peck basalt with climbing with a hammer. After 10 strokes, sweep, with all his might – in stone a hole formed in the size of only about 2 x 2 x 2 centimeters!) Photo from open sources
6. And Kailasanath, according to my feelings, is approximately equal in area (but slightly lower) the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Photo from open sources
7. But we are distracted! The entire temple was originally covered in white. very strong shiny plaster and was called Ranga Mahal – “painted palace”. Its snow-white silhouette stood out as a bright spot against the background of black rocks.

8. Now the plaster has collapsed and the temple has acquired a deep dark gray and sometimes yellowish color, merging with the surrounding rock formation.
