Scientists said that strong “tropical” showers can become the climatic norm in central Russia and other parts of the world, where similar precipitation has not been observed before. So last year American meteorological services determined that abnormal downpours in these regions began to happen eighty percent more often than necessary.
Heavy rains falling from layered rain clouds may go from three hours to whole days, covering huge space – hundreds of square kilometers. However, they are not especially dangerous.
Cumulonimbus clouds produce a completely different type of rainfall – these showers do not last long and occupy relatively small areas, however are incredibly intense. Such rains are called extreme and attributed to dangerous weather events. Power the threat they conceal depends on the region and time of year. For example, in Moscow in summer, rain is considered dangerous when more than one hundred millimeters of water falls out, in other words, when one hundred liters of moisture is poured per square meter. Fifteenth August 2016 in the Russian capital, it just rained so much. And in the US state of Louisiana on the same day was observed truly extreme rainfall – the so-called “rain bomb”.

“Rain bombs” means rainfall falling from powerful thunderclouds. The front of such a cloud contains intense ascending air currents, while the central and the back is descending. Their formation is promoted by evaporating particles of ice and water of which the cloud consists. Air above the cloud cools down, then goes down. The more moisture evaporates in the cloud, the more powerful the downward stream. Sometimes her speed may exceed twenty meters per second! Such “micro-squalls” enormous volumes of moisture carry along, dropping them to the ground.

Causes of “rain bombs” in the middle latitudes
It’s hard to say whether “rain” will appear in our country bombs, “however international scientists suggest that it’s quite perhaps. The global climate is changing rapidly, and showers similar to tropical, appear already in those places where they have never been for the whole history of our civilization.
Researchers blame this on the notorious global warming. According to experts, large volumes of carbon dioxide, released into the atmosphere, heat the air, and it becomes able to contain much more water vapor. From here and extreme rains in different parts of the earth.
