Tomsk scientists recorded a powerful methane emission into the atmosphere in area of the East Siberian Sea. This phenomenon occurred in as a result of the release of gas from melting submarine permafrost.

During the expedition aboard the ship “Akademik M. Keldysh” scientists have recorded significant greenhouse gas emissions. The expedition members examined areas of the East Siberian Sea, where gas fountains (vultures) were discovered. According to experts, vultures are the result of a break in the submarine permafrost and methane escaping to the surface of the water.

Scientists discovered a sudden increase in methane concentration in atmosphere exceeded planetary meanings 6-7 times.

Remoteness to experts to establish coordinates of the most powerful sip. Together with that, scientists were able to personally observe one of these emissions. This the vulture consisted of a thousand bubble threads stretching from the sea depths to the surface. Head of the expedition Igor Semiletov admitted that for the first time in 45 Arctic expeditions he observed such powerful greenhouse gas emissions. And the very next day was another sip of the same power, but on a different sea plot.

According to experts, permafrost is akin to a climate bomb with delayed action. Continuous greenhouse gas emissions only only enhances the greenhouse effect. In this case, permafrost collapses under the influence of global warming, which is even more enhances climate change on Earth.

Currently, scientists are continuing to study and are preparing to study the powerful vultures formed in the Laptev Sea.

Two years ago, at the bottom of the Barents Sea, scientists discovered huge “hillocks”, which, according to experts, may in the future explode, releasing monstrous volumes of methane into the atmosphere.
