Cloud inversion is an atmospheric anomaly, a phenomenon that occurs when a mass of warm air is above the cold, not letting it rise. As a result of this on low altitude clouds form. Overclocking them can only the wind, but it was not above the canyon.

Cloud inversion, according to Grand Canyon rangers, appears in these places on average once every 10 years. But this year nature surprised everyone: the inversion was here in 2013 too. Thick fog and clouds hid the entire canyon. It looks like a scene from science fiction movie. The best photos are made with the so-called “Maser Point” – the main platform from which the picturesque panorama of tens of kilometers around.

According to Cory Mottis, National Park Service Officer (Cory Mottice), for this spectacle you need to thank the cyclone, which recently appeared in Arizona along with fog and heavy rains, and then moved to the Grand Canyon area. The clouds should scatter for a few days, Mottis noted.

The canyon is cut by the Colorado River (it flows at its bottom) for millions of years in the thickness of limestones, shales and sandstones. Length canyon – 446 km. The width (at the level of the Colorado Plateau) ranges from six to 29 km, and at the bottom level – less than a kilometer. Depth comes up to 1800 meters.
