Another Super Volcano Swells: Significant deformations are observed on the Phlegrean fields in Italy

Is a new “magnetic pole shift” approaching?

According to a recent report by scholars from Naples, on the Phlegrean Fields near Naples land deformation recently significantly increased. Over the past 12 months, land in some places, near the city of Pozzuoli, it was raised by about 8 cm. The highest elevation recorded using GPS devices occurred in July-August 2012 and in December.

The trend seems to continue. Such (sometimes dramatic, with a total volume of up to several meters over several years) raising and lowering the earth were known in Phlegreian Fields are antiquated and are not a new phenomenon. Them usually can be explained by normal variations in pressure, temperature and density in the giant hydrothermal system of the caldera Phlegreian Fields and perhaps they do not necessarily indicate imminent eruption.

However, in addition to the detected deformations of the earth, scientists also measured the increase in the number of micro-earthquakes, increase temperature and, in particular, an increase in the proportion of magmatic gases origin in fumaroles in the crater of Solfatara.

Since the hydrothermal system is closely related to the focus of the main complex on the Phlegrean fields, the new magma movements are actually may be the culprit of the observed changes. If so, then the answer to the question whether this will lead to a new eruption of the volcano at present time is still uncertain. Growth and observed the changes would be much larger if the new volcanic activity, in fact, would declare itself.

The last volcanic eruption occurred after a dormant period of about 3000 years ago, in 1538 BC, and created a new cone ash, Monte Nuovo (“New Mountain”) near Pozzuoli. Strong ups earthquakes and changes in sources and fumaroles preceded by an eruption according to historical sources. Even if it will be – in a geological sense – quite a small outlier, the consequences of such an event today will be devastating for such a densely populated area.

However, as previously established by scientists, a quick and complete change magnetic poles became a “global event” that led to about 41,000 eruption of a supervolcano on the Felgrays fields in Naples years ago. Perhaps the current changes in the range of the supervolcano and acceleration of processes in the Earth’s magnetic system have a certain interconnection.
