This week, doctors are finishing the final preparations for carrying out procedures for introducing a person into artificial suspended animation. People will be placed in a state between life and death so that doctors got extra time for operations when mortal wounds.
Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA will place 10 patients who came to them in artificial suspended animation, meeting certain criteria, one of them is fatal gunshot wound. Similar patients come to them approximately once a month, so the first experiment can take place already in April
Surgeon Samuel Tisherman, who conducts the experiment, said in interview with New Scientist magazine: “We pause life processes, but we don’t want to call it artificial suspended animation, because it sounds like a sci-fi expression of the film … We call it emergency preservation and restoration life functions. ”
This process is carried out as follows:
1. Saline is injected into the brain and heart. He will circulate through the arteries of the whole body, replacing blood.
2. Within 15 minutes, the patient’s body is cooled to a temperature 10 °.
3. The patient will not have blood, he will not breathe, but his or her cells will continue to live for several hours.
4. Doctors will have extra time to work, then in the body will be transfused with new blood. In a pig experiment in 2002, the animal’s heart earned itself and blood circulation warmed up the body. If the heart does not begin to beat, the patient will resuscitation.
People will not be frozen for years, as shown in science fiction films. At least for now.
The surgeon Peter Ree from University of Arizona at Tucson. He told New Scientist: “After conducting these experiments the definition of the word “dead” has changed … Every day at work I ascertain the death of people. They have no signs of life, palpitations, their brain stopped working. I I sign the paper, in my heart knowing that they are actually not completely are dead. I could freeze them. But I have to wrap them in bag, although I know that a solution exists. ”
At the 2010 Ted Scientific Conference, Mark Roth, Cell Biologist from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center talked about his work on artificial suspended animation and prospects. is he uses small doses of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide located where oxygen normally accumulates, so thus reducing oxygen demand. He successfully tried this method of introduction into suspended animation in mice.
The biologist emphasized the role of suspended animation in nature. Plant seeds and bacterial spores can remain dormant for 250 years without losing its functions. Ovum in woman’s ovaries has been inactive for about 50 years. In pet stores bags with sea monkeys are on sale. Dip them in water and in a week they will begin to swim.
The mouth also gave examples when people accidentally fell into suspended animation: the skier fell under the ice waterfall, she there was no heartbeat, it could be considered dead. However she was able to revive, and she was healthy. Canada is 13 months old the girl was on the street in the winter in one diaper. She was found in a state of clinical death, but survived.
In many cases, people can be revived after a few hours. after cardiac arrest without serious neurological damage, Roth thinks.
