Scientists predict that growth will begin in the coming decades water levels in the ocean due to melting glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic, which will entail many disastrous consequences. Therein Easter Island Moai’s famous ancient statues will be flooded (Rapanui).
By 2100, according to researchers, the sea level will rise approximately 2 meters. In this regard, endangered Moai sculptures that now stand almost at the very edge of the water, that is, the advancing water front will destroy in first stage ceremonial platform (akh) of Tongariki with her 15 sculptures of various sizes. It will also disappear from the face of the earth the famous white-coral beach in Anaken Bay, and therefore akhu Akahanga, where the fallen moai currently lie.
That’s why the inhabitants of the island of Rapanui are already thinking about how to protect its sights, for example, they already asked the government of Chile to allocate funds for construction of a special wall that could save unique statues of moai. However, scientists are not yet sure that this measure will be effective. Officials are also considering the transport of statues standing or lying close to the water, inland islands.
Recall that the Moai statue was erected around XIII – XIV centuries, the indigenous inhabitants of Easter Island – Rapanui, who they themselves appeared here no later than the X century from Eastern Polynesia. The mystery remains how these primitive people managed to create and, most importantly, to establish such huge statues, like that – why?
