Scientists have recorded changes in the unique relict lake Mogilny title=A photo from open sources

In the Barents Sea there is Kildin Island – a little-studied territory Russia, since it was and is still under jurisdiction military department of the Russian Federation. And although even this island in itself unique, there is generally a real miracle of nature – the lake Grave (named after Cape Mogilny, near which located).

In 1985, this lake was given the status of state natural monument of republican significance, and in the course of many years expeditions (at the turn of the millennium) of research scientists PINRO Institute even wrote about this natural monument book “Relic Lake Mogilnoye”.

The peculiarity of this reservoir is that it is multilayer – like a pie. Its lower layer is hydrogen sulfide, which is why the lake The grave is sometimes even called the Black Sea in miniature. Next come two salt layers, differing from each other in salt concentration, and the top layer is fresh water.

Amazingly, all four of these layers do not mix in The grave, in each of them has its own flora and fauna. True, the inhabitants of the reservoir often take a fancy to several border habitats such as the unique kildin cod (subspecies of Atlantic cod), which is found only here, and therefore, even listed in the Red Book of Russia, lives at the same time in fresh and salt water.

There are no more such inland bodies of water in Russia and Europe at all, and there are only four of them in the world, however, in this case the Grave stands out among other similar lakes for its truly amazing characteristics.

And then a recent expedition of the University of MASU suddenly discovered that something incomprehensible is happening in Lake Mogilny – practically the upper fresh water layer completely disappeared. As the publication reports Interfax, referring to the press service of the university, is not never seen here since the beginning of the study of the lake in the first half of the last century. Scientists make the assumption that the reason for this may depletion of streams flowing into the lake. But the reason for this a phenomenon can be anything that falls within the definition – change in the ecology of this region, as well as the Earth as a whole.

By the way, scientists have determined that along with the extinction freshwater upper layer of the grave, deep hydrogen sulfide increased by approximately two meters. How will this affect the fauna and the flora of the reservoir is still unknown, however, stable layering the unique lake was clearly broken – and this is alarming researchers, although they suggest that the opposite is possible processes, that is, the fresh water layer will still recover. All this will show the final expedition planned for the end of spring next year, well, wait and see –
