The Brocken ghost, contrary to the first thought of many of us, is not some specific ghost, and not a ghost at all. It goes about a rare atmospheric phenomenon when the shadow of a person standing on a mountain peak or ridge cast off onto fog or clouds, located in the direction opposite to the sun. Far in the haze a huge and vague human figure arises, often surrounded by a colorful halo. The silhouette usually seems voluminous and stirring: not only due to the movement of the traveler, but and due to fluctuations in water suspended in the air.
The mysterious optical phenomenon got its name in honor of the German peak Brocken, where almost all year round favorable weather conditions for the appearance of such shadows. In the past times, as you might guess, it was believed that the phenomenon wears mystical character, and on Brocken witches and other devilry. However, if you do not know what you are dealing with, then you can these days it’s great to collapse when you see a mountain climbing giant dark silhouette in the fog. Broken ghosts sometimes noticed in the Carpathians, and one of such meetings took place in the past Sunday, January 14th.
