California scientists discovered at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean next to The west coast is a growing fault system generating earthquakes. This was reported by the information publication Science Alert.
For four days, scientists conducted deep-sea research at help the 19 km MARS cable network designed to fixation of deep earthquakes. Research equipment was installed during maintenance cables. At the end of the fiber optic cables were fixed special equipment emitting light flashes. When tremors, the light begins to scatter, and, being reflected, it is transmitted by cable to the receiving device.
Researchers have discovered between the faults of San Gregorio and San Andreas an unknown fault system that is not so large like the first two. However, in northern California, scientists are already recorded tremors of magnitude 3.5.
The technology developed by scientists can be used to search and exploration of hazardous areas at the bottom of the ocean tsunami formation. The cost of this system is about 13.5 million dollars. Despite the fact that the equipment is expensive, its use will help scientists identify potentially hazardous areas and avoid catastrophic consequences in the future.
