As a 3rd year student at the Physics and Technology Institute of ISTU Alexander began to do research on measuring amplitude super long wavelength signals. Then the passion turned into a serious scientific research and PhD thesis on “Monitoring ionosphere by oblique sounding by coherent ADD radio signals. ”

“Ultra-long-wave radio waves today are widely used for radio navigation of ships and submarines. These radio signals are transmitted from the transmitter to thousands kilometers, reflected from the surface of the earth and the lower layers ionosphere. The Earth’s surface and ionosphere form a kind of planetary waveguide. Numerous processes in the ionosphere cause changes in amplitude and signal phases. The most interesting is the seismoionospheric effect, ”says graduate student A. Poletaev. – He is in that a few days before the earthquake above its epicenter abnormal inhomogeneities arise in the ionosphere. It is manifested primarily in the abnormal behavior of the phase of the radio signals. ”

Alexander is currently receiving status information. ionosphere amplitudes from 10 radio stations of the world – Norway, Germany, Italy, Japan, India, USA (Hawaii), UK, Australia and two stations of France. These radio stations have huge antenna systems and emit waves longer than 10 km!

“With our equipment, we receive radio signals from these radio stations, and signal processing, as in all modern digital devices carried on the computer, ”says A. Poletaev. A special device for receiving information and Alexander developed the program for data processing himself. Already more two years he has been collecting data on the amplitude of extra-long radio waves. “Data is analyzed to compare with various processes: regular (daily and seasonal changes in illumination ionosphere) and irregular, associated, for example, with space weather (solar flares, magnetic storms and substorms). After all, by changes in amplitude and phase must be distinguished, which is associated with an earthquake, and what about a flash in the sun. ”

The young scientist plans to start creating automated earthquake prediction system. “For this you need to accumulate an array of information for at least a few years, carry out statistical processing of experimental data, develop a technique for isolating seismic events activity. As far as I know, similar systems are developed in Stanford University in the USA and New Zealand. Open information on the creation of software products for the purpose of forecasting there are practically no earthquakes, ”says A. Poletaev.

According to A. Poletaev, in our seismically active region it is necessary to organize a network of receiving stations that could carry out long-term monitoring of the ionosphere. “Can be positioned our receivers are around Lake Baikal, because often and underwater earthquakes. The result is a whole system – super long wave interferometer. To make an assessment the heterogeneities that arise in the ionosphere need at least three receiving stations. Those signals that come to each station, form intersecting paths. The paths that signals travel to receiving stations, intersect, and if at the point of their intersection was heterogeneity in the ionosphere, then anomalous variations in amplitude and phase will be registered by all receivers. Watching them change signals on different tracks at different points of reception, you can establish exactly where this heterogeneity occurred. Receivers can located near Irkutsk and at the observatories of the Institute of Solar and terrestrial physics SORAN. Our colleagues are interested in this development, since the monitoring system in the ultra-long wavelength range will be a good addition to existing learning complexes ionosphere “, – says post-graduate student A. Poletaev about his work.

Currently, the territory of the Irkutsk region There are no super-long wavelength stations.
