Lowering the water level in the deepest lake of the planet by 40 cm per year threatens Lake Baikal with a real environmental disaster. Level water in Lake Baikal approached a critical value, reports TASS with reference to the statement of the doctor of geographical sciences Endon Garmaev. The minimum allowable water level in the lake is 456.09 m, at the moment it remains to the critical indicator only 9 cm.

According to Garmaev, lowering the water level in the deepest lake 40 cm of the planet per year threatens Lake Baikal with a real environmental disaster. Due to shallowing, litter disappears on the lake – small low-water bays, where they find food and endemic multiply species of fish for Baikal. The greatest decrease in water is noticeable in the delta Selenga is a favorite place for spawning fish. To natural restoration of the water level in Baikal – snowmelt – there is still three whole months. Garmaev explains the decline in water in Lake Baikal technogenic factors, namely, the activities of local energy companies, and the small volume of water in the Selenga River, which supplies 50% of lake water. The scientist said that in 2014 in Baikal 60% less water than usual. Although the Selenga is only one from 491 rivers supplying Baikal, other water sources could not compensate for its low water.
