New “electronic blood” will feed the most powerful computers of the world

Engineers of one of the world’s largest technology companies faced with a problem: modern supercomputers are becoming so powerful that we might just not have enough energy, to feed them. To combat this problem, IBM decided to take an example from a car that is already in our hands thousands of years from our own brain. Human brain in thousands of times denser and more efficient than any modern computer, as he uses the same network of blood vessels for heat and energy transfer at the same time. New IBM technology, dubbed “electronic blood” is probably located in dozens of years from a full scan. However, researchers have already demonstrated its capabilities in the laboratory. Her essence lies in the fact that the liquid is charged by electric current and goes to computer processors, while cooling them and giving back the energy they need. The gigantic dimensions of modern supercomputers are partly due to the fact that a huge the amount of heat generated by them does not allow placing their chips close to each other. But if you equip them with a liquid system cooling and power, their chips can be placed in three measurements, which will radically reduce the size of the system. For today day “petaflop” computer – capable of performing one quadrillion operations per second – occupies about half of the football field. IBM believes that with the help of three-dimensional architecture and electronic blood its dimensions can be reduced to the size of the desktop a computer. Also today, almost half of all the energy that consume similar systems, goes to power cooling systems. TO For example, in the US, data centers are responsible for almost 2 percent energy consumption of the country. Moreover, according to the forecasts of scientists, during less than 20 years the world’s fastest supercomputers theoretically will be able to perform a trillion billion operations per second – at 300 thousand times more than today. However, taking into account the current level technology, IBM says, such a computer will consume more energy than our planet can produce.
