GLONASS – Soviet, then Russian global navigation satellite system – turned out to be much better than the American GPS global positioning systems in the northern latitudes. At this domestic service perfectly provides its coverage twenty-four companions, and the Americans have use as many as thirty.
According to Andrei Ilyin, who is the chief of the Chief space facilities test center in general GLONASS is in no way inferior to that created by scientists of the United States navigation system “GPS”, and by some characteristics it’s even superior. For example, in the northern latitudes, the Russian brainchild by accuracy parameters ahead of the American competitor, since GLONASS was created by our compatriots precisely for these areas.
In addition, the domestic system global coverage provide twenty-four spacecraft, while Americans need three dozen. Maybe for some people this the fact will seem insignificant, but experts are well aware what does it mean. It is no coincidence that the GLONASS system is now interested in countries as global as China and India, who are skeptical of the alternative “GPS”.
It is worth recalling that at the moment the orbital constellation GLONASS is represented by twenty-eight satellites. Twenty four aircraft are in orbit, two are undergoing testing, and the remaining ones make up the orbital reserve. GLONASS considered a serious rival to “GPS”. Already this year accuracy Russian navigation system in Russia will be less than meter.
