International team of scientists (including representatives Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences), put forward a new hypothesis that lead to the onset of the ice age 440 million years ago . According to scientists, in ancient times between Mars and Jupiter could collide simultaneously several asteroids, resulting in a huge amount of dust and debris formed. Philip heck (University of Chicago) thinks monstrous amounts of dust settled on Earth for 2 million years. Sunlight just could not break through this amount of dust, and the climate on Earth getting colder. Scientists came to this conclusion, by researching breeds taken from southern Sweden and areas St. Petersburg. A large amount of dust was found in the marine limestone on the banks of the Lynna River, which flows into the Neva, as well as in Kinnekulle (Sweden). It turned out that all the collected items belong to one group of meteorites. 440 million years ago in due to climate change on Earth a massive extinction, as a result of which 60% of creatures and 85% died under water on the land. Scientists believe that on our planet there were 5 mass extinctions.
