Israeli scientists have proven that plants experience pain and even can “scream” in the ultrasonic range. Results of research papers presented at bioRxiv.org.
During the experiment, scientists drove plants and recorded at a distance of 10 centimeters from them arising ultrasonic waves.
The stress state in plants was caused in various ways. For example, plants left without water emitted ultrasound near 65 decibels. The highest frequency of sound vibrations in a tomato 49 kilohertz, while tobacco had 54 kilohertz. When the leaves plants began to be cut with a knife, the sound pressure amounted to about 65 decibels, tomato and tobacco – 57 kilohertz.
The neural network developed by researchers with an accuracy of 70% able to recognize sounds made by plants depending on type of stress. Moreover, the algorithm can distinguish up to 98% ultrasounds from plants or electrical appliances. Besides of this, scientists turned out with the help of artificial intelligence to distinguish the “cry” of plants from background sound vibrations.
Do plants “shout” and why is it necessary
Scientists believe that ultrasound occurs at the time of cavitation, when xylem (water-conducting tissue) forms bubbles. it allows plants to notify other organisms of their condition.
It turns out some types of moths will not lay eggs to plants that are stressed. Probably insects understand that the plant is dying, and “realize” the futility their actions. When a plant experiences a caterpillar invasion, it also sends distress signals, and carnivores catch these signals and rush to the “help”.
