An international team of scientists has discovered that the oceans are significantly more absorb greenhouse gases than previously thought. This information appeared on Phys.org.
Previously, scientists believed that about a quarter of carbon dioxide, formed by human activity, enters the oceans. Experts more carefully analyzed the volume of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere and absorbed by the oceans. They also considered satellite data on salinity, surface temperature ocean and surface wind speed.
It turned out that every year 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide withdrawn from the Earth’s atmosphere, which is 1/3 of the emissions from combustion fuel. At first glance, this phenomenon can be perceived as a favorable process, however, this leads to acidification of the oceans, and, in ultimately leading to the extinction of marine life.
Previously, the UN Panel on Climate Change, stated that humanity has only 10 years left to prevent environmental disaster.
