For three years now, an experiment called “Garden Nemo. “The project was specifically designed to create an enabling conditions providing a high yield of edible plants in areas where traditional farming practices are difficult for implementation.
Plants are grown inside special closed biospheres, which are secured with cargo on the seabed and are about 9-10 meters under water. Despite the unusual location, crops are getting enough daylight from the surface of the sea, while maintaining constant favorable temperature for plants at 25 degrees.
As seawater evaporates, its condensate settles on the walls of the biospheres, which creates a humid environment, very favorable for plant growth. The installation itself is very inexpensive, and also environmentally friendly.
So far, researchers have succeeded using this method in growing several bunches of basil – to taste the basil turned out to be virtually indistinguishable from their counterparts grown with traditional agricultural practices.
