Seven long-forgotten American patents from XIX centuries

What only American inventors have not patented in their time. Quite interesting historical documents that either amaze everyone by being ahead of their time, or just amuse others with their absurdity and worthlessness. Let’s look at a few long forgotten inventions that have recently surfaced in the US National Archives.

1. Mechanical fan

The distant ancestor of the first electric fan, patented in 1830, was a special mechanism based on gears, springs and levers. Instead of plastic blades used a wide sheet of paper stretched over a wooden the frame. What? Very good, judging by the facial expression of a person on explanatory image. And maybe the whole thing is how stuffed it is smoking pipe? I do not even know.

Now it’s hard to imagine what I wanted to achieve in 1810 the inventor of this diving suit. Judging by image, this suit consisted of many rings, inside of which there should have been a diver.

Nowadays, the yellow rubber duckling for the bathroom looks where more friendly and many children happily play with him during swimming. In 1870, this toy was more severe and realistic. and looked like a real duck with a built-in clockwork mechanism.

4. Rocking chair with built-in fan

Why just swing in a rocking chair, if you can let is this energy to your advantage? So decided the inventor who patented this chair in 1847. Swinging in it, you bring in The action is a special fan located above your head. IN hot days, this chair must have been a real salvation for residents of the southern states of the USA.

5. Flight machine

Looking at this patent, you involuntarily think about what it was one of the first attempts to invent a hang glider. I could not find information on whether the inventor of this machine managed eventually fly at least a few meters. Nonetheless invention looks very curious for 1869, because in those years aviation pioneers like Otto Lilienthal were just starting to do timid steps in this direction.

6. Liferaft

Do you think that a life jacket is uncomfortable? Look with what inventors saw a liferaft in 1837. This raft literally had to be worn on yourself. And yes, it would be funny walk in this form along one of the main streets of a large cities.

If I saw a clay doll crawling on me from the darkness, I would immediately open a small brick factory. And the children in 1871, most likely, they were still glad to have such a toy. Yet, there is something creepy in this old mechanical doll, not find?

As you can see, patents are issued not only by companies like Apple, Google and Samsung, but also mere mortals like you and me. History keeps a lot of interesting documents that sooner or later will be made public, and we will definitely discuss in the future.
