In Iran, many today don’t know what a snowstorm is, because here, by our standards, and winter, as such, is not it happens. But it was in Iran that the most terrible snowstorm occurred, which claimed the lives of almost five thousand people. For comparison, we say that the most the powerful and destructive tornado that hit Bangladesh in 1989, became deadly for only 1300 people.
Light snow in Iran began on February 3, 1972 – it brought wind from the Caucasus. Few people paid attention to that snow. At first, this happened before, and secondly, such precipitation caused (and before still cause – see the video below) the inhabitants of this sunny countries rather surprise and joy than any concern. However, soon the “snow joy” grew into real blizzard. Although at first this did not alert anyone – people, especially in villages, just closed in houses and began to wait out the bad weather, although in fact it was necessary to run to hell, from this the elements, while the roads are not swept and settlements have not cut off from power supply and telephone communications.
In the six days during which a blizzard raged here, many villages were under a thick layer of snow, which in individual places reached eight meters – just imagine such a thing!

Many villagers died under the rubble of their homes, who could not stand the weight of the snow (buried alive), and someone just froze because the temperature soon plummeted to minus 20 degrees Celsius. And if in almost every locality (more than a hundred villages and villages were affected) there were many victims of this natural elements, then two villages of Iran (Kumar and Kakkan) that February were completely obliterated – not one survived in them human.
The blizzard eventually subsided, but a storm thawed behind it, and now the huge snow drifts began to melt rapidly, “giving” the villagers another severe test – a powerful a flood that killed many who escaped from the snow …
