Many know the satirical story of the Strugatsky brothers “The Tale of the Three.” This work is a continuation of the cult “Monday starts on Saturday.” In a nutshell about the plot: the point is that power on the 76th floor of the building of the Research Institute of Witchcraft and Wizardry (NIICHAVO) usurped so called Three Rationalization and Disposal of Unexplained Phenomenon (TRUNNY), and the heroes have much to do to crush this stronghold of ignorance and bureaucracy.
But is it not the task of our site to discuss literary and political merits of the Strugatsky story? And that’s where the dog is buried: one of TPRUNYA’s ideas was the creation of a subcommission on re-education of mosquitoes, bugs and other blood-sucking insects! But in the yard 2013, and what seemed delusional in the distant sixties of the last century, it turns out, not so far from truths. True, it is not party political work that helps here, but genetics!
The fact is, researchers at Howard Medical Institute Hughes (MIGH) revealed the mechanism of smell in insects, it turns out that the orco gene helps them recognize odors. Using gene engineering scientists were able to change the gene in a mosquito larva, and create mutant strain of insects. Mutated mosquitoes have been identified decreased activity in neurons associated with sense of smell. Held after that, the tests showed even more changes.
When normal mosquitoes have a choice between a person and another animals, it is reliably known that they will hum with a buzz in side of man. But mosquitoes with a mutation demonstrated decreased interest in humans, preferring guinea pigs. So in a way that violates one single gene, we can thoroughly bring down confused mosquitoes in search of people, scientists say.
