Every year at least 300 million tons of plastic waste thrown out by the people of our planet into containers, with the aim of its further disposal. Scientists estimate 0.1 percent unprocessed plastic, gets into the waters of the oceans, forming huge landfills floating on the surface, and sometimes even whole islands of trash.
Australian scientists, led by Carlos Duarte, decided to investigate the level of pollution of the oceans, catching nets garbage that invariably falls into the cycles of the ocean currents.
What has been found out as a result of the study has plunged scientists and the whole world is in shock. Oceanographers were able to detect only 40 tons plastic on the surface of the oceans, which is only one percent from the amount of garbage that scientists were supposed to see.
